CPLP ambassadors to Senegal strengthen strategic cooperation

The group of ambassadors of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) accredited in Senegal Thursday carried out several actions with the Senegalese authorities and the academic community.

The initiative is intended to boost political, economic, cultural, social and friendship relations.

The actions focused on promoting the Portuguese language in Senegal, where figures stands at more than 47,000 students learning Portuguese.

The diplomatic engagement counted on the Executive Secretary of the CPLP Zacarias da Costa and the permanent representative of Angola in this organisation, ambassador Francisco Oliveira Encoge.

The diplomats held, among other meetings, an audience with the Senegalese Foreign Affairs minister, Aissata Tall Sall, who praised the growth of ties with the CPLP countries, according to a note released by the Angolan Embassy in Senegal and reached ANGOP Saturday.

According to the statement, the minister Aissata Tall Sall highlighted the historical relationship of her country with Brazil, Portugal, as well as the strong dynamics of cooperation and friendship that Senegal maintains with Angola in different areas, including the sector of oil and its by-products.

The Senegalese minister, who also mentioned the importance of Cabo Verde and Guinea-Bissau, said that Angola, along with other countries, is an example to follow, especially due to its experience in oil exploration.

In turn, the Executive Secretary of the CPLP, Zacarias da Costa, said the meeting was fruitful, especially due to the importance of deepening relations between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the CPLP.

“We talked a lot about initiatives within ECOWAS and the CPLP, especially how we can deepen the economic relationship in other areas,” Costa said, stressing the strategic importance that Senegal has in the West African region, as well as its status as an observer member of the CPLP.

The permanent representative of Angola in the CPLP, Ambassador Francisco Oliveira Encoge, said the meeting held with Senegalese authorities will certainly help to generate new momentum to the recognised dynamic cooperation between the CPLP and Senegal.

“Several aspects were discussed at the meeting that could mark, in the short and medium term, cooperation between the CPLP and ECOWAS, recalling that we have two members that are also members of this organisation, in this case Guinea-Bissau and Cabo Verde,” Encoge said.

This is the first official visit of an executive secretary of the CPLP to Senegal, and was marked by meetings with the Minister of National Education, Cheikh Oumar Anne, and the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, Moussa Baldé.

The Executive Secretary of CPLP also held a working meeting with the ambassadors of the Member States of the CPLP in Senegal and visited the Cheikh Anta Diop University.

The visit was part of the commemorations of World Day of Portuguese Language, celebrated on May 5.

The CPLP comprises Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and East Timor.

Since 2008, Senegal has been an Associated Observer of the CPLP, making it one of the first countries to obtain the status.

Health minister praises role of nurses

Angolan minister of Health Sílvia Lutucuta recognised Friday the dedication and commitment of nurses, which she described as crucial for national health system.

In a message, ahead of the International Nurses Day on Friday, the minister said that these professionals play an essential role in the day-to-day of the sector.

She referred that the date, celebrated in honour of the birth of Florence Nightingale, mother of modern nursing, offers an important opportunity to recognise how fundamental the role that these professionals play is, observing its Code of Ethics and Deontology.

Sílvia Lutucuta underlined that they are always concerned with the development of their technical skills, social awareness and love for others.

She said that this year, the Nurse’s Day is marked in a special way, at a time when the world celebrates the success of international coordination, with the end of the COVID-19 emergency, moving to a long-term management transition.

“On this occasion, we pay a simple tribute to all the professionals who perished in the fight against COVID-19, which included all health professionals”, she expressed.

The Ministry of Health has defined the repositioning of primary health care, including community health, as one of the key priorities for accelerating access to quality health care.

The minister stated that the role of nurses is fundamental in this equation since, on many occasions, they are the first – and only – health professionals that a patient has access to.

Currently, the Nursing class represents 49.03% of the health workforce.

In the last two public tenders, 2018 and 2019, 21,151 nursing professionals were admitted throughout the country and subsidies for additional hours were implemented for the class.

Sílvia Lutucuta announced that 1,123 nursing technicians in priority specialties are completing post-medium training and that postgraduate nursing specialisation courses will begin shortly.

Mineral Resources Ministry recommends continuous assessment of mining activity

The 8th Consultative Council of the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas (MIREMPET) has recommended continued assessment of the performance of mining operators and the application of legal mechanisms to mitigate the effects of idle areas.

The recommendations of the meeting, held on May 11 to 12 in Uige province, included the implementation of social impact projects in communities where exploration activities are carried out and to conduct geological surveys in areas of higher metal concentration along with compliance with deadlines set out in the Mining Code.

The participants also suggested the implementation of an improved licensing system, registration and sharing of information about the mining sector, preparation of studies towards the different types of existing soil in national territory and other types of raw materials to improve agricultural production.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, The Minister OF Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, praised the contributions of the delegates, whose information, he said, will contribute to strengthen the ministerial department.

The minister underlined that despite the significant gains achieved by the sector in recent years, there is still a long way to go, taking into account the responsibility of this ministerial department in improving the living conditions of Angolans.

Diamantino Azevedo announced the holding of an extended meeting with Mirempet staff, scheduled for 2024, where issues related to the sector will be discussed.

Youth and Civic Education Minister calls on youths to be resilient and hard-working

The Minister of Youth Affairs and Civic Education, Mounouna Fotsou has called on the youths of the North West Region to embrace peace, hard work, and resilience in order to build a brighter future for themselves and generations to come.

This was on May 12 at the campus of the University of Bamenda, while officially launching the civilian component of activities leading up to the National Day, on May 20. The theme of this year’s 20th May celebration is “Defense forces and Cameroon people in harmony to safeguard peace and national unity, bedrock to a strong and prosperous Cameroon”.

The Minister stated that “the theme of this year is based on that synergy, harmony between the defense forces and the Cameroonian people. This locality chosen is the testimony of living together and also national unity”

The event saw the presence of the Minister |Delegate at the Presidency in charge of the Supreme State Audit, Mrs. Mbah Acha Rose.

This was another opportunity for the minister to hand out government support to youths within the framework of President Paul Biya’s three years special youth plan, a program that has funded over 500 youth projects in this part of the country since 2017.

A symbolic number of youth biometric cards, National flags, and other national symbols, were also handed to youth groups and others in view of empowering the youth and sensitizing them on the laws of the nation and institutions.

It should be noted that this launching comes after the inauguration of two multipurpose youth empowerment centers in Baligham and Bamendakwe this Thursday, May 13.

SW Peace Forum: Gov’t to examine challenges and trace way forward

The Director of Cabinet at the Prime Minister’s office Ebune Confiance Balungeli on behalf of the Prime Minister has said that the government is committed to the socio-economic development of the South West region.

He was speaking during the opening of the first-ever peace and development forum organized by the Southwest Regional Assembly.

The Minister’s representative cited ongoing efforts to revamp the two agro-industrial giants in the region.

According to him, such an initiative offers a veritable platform to harness local energy toward restoring sustainable peace and development in the region.

” This Forum has to do with examining the challenges of this region and tracing the way forward. For the next two days, they are going to discuss them. It shows the atomized importance of the fact that people can come together and discuss topical issues of this region. You all know that this region has been inflicted with many security challenges. Thank God things are getting better and better” he stated.

The PM’s representative continued, “The peace process is permanent.

I have come, I have listened and I am going back to report to the Prime Minister the enthusiasm of the people of South West region for peace and development. Their attachment to a state institution and to H.E president Paul Biyia”

“The South West region through this conference has shown that they have their destiny in their hands and that, they don’t depend on onlookers” he continued

The President of the South West Regional Assembly, Bakoma Zacheus Elango, said they intend to use the platform to gather ideas that will sustain the achievement registered since the start of their mandate over two years ago.

“We are aware of the certain challenges we face and therefore we have decided to convene this forum that we have named ” South West Peace and Development Forum” Bakoma stated in

an interview granted to the state broadcaster, CRTV.

The platform which ended on May 13 will provided an avenue for the population from the grassroots to ask questions and get clarification on varied subject matters that concern the region.

Stranded traders want demand indemnity and new market location

Close to 200 frustrated traders, victims of the Thursday May 11 massive demolition exercise at Marché de la Garè in New Bell Douala II sub-division say till present, authorities have said nothing about their highly expected indemnification.

“The common man has been feeding from his activities in this demolished market. The economy of the country is broken. No jobs. How will the traders be able to feed their families and take care of the school needs of their children? The situation is critical. We are still waiting to hear from the mayor of Douala II and government authorities.” A victim explained.

In order to meet their household needs, some of the victims have decided to squeeze themselves at along the road to market their goods in a bit to generate income.

“Presently we are selling on the road despite accident risks. We are compelled to take the risk because it is the sole option.”

On the site, agents (municipal police) of the Douala II council and security elements are present to ensure the caterpillar clears off the debris without any resistance from the traders.

Since Thursday, victims are still on the site trying to recover some items buried in the debris.

Other young persons stormed the place extracting iron rods, planks, aluminium and other important materials to sell.

According to the Douala II council authorities, the demolition of the Marché de la Garè falls within the council’s urban disorder fight plan.

What the traders now want is indemnity and a new market where they can continue their activities.
