Nigeria requires all of society approach to curtail insecurity – lrabor

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor says Nigeria requires an all of society approach to curtail the various forms of insecurity facing it.

Irabor said this on Thursday in Abuja, at a two-day workshop on “Use of Broadcasting in Complementing the Military in Conflict Mitigation and Management”.

Represented by Rear Admiral Tanko Pani, Director of Training, Defence Headquarters, Irabor said that the complex nature of the security challenges require multi-sectoral and specialised efforts from the society.

He said that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) have reviewed its strategies and policies and gave prominence to the whole of society approach, to ensure effective attainment of military goals and national development objectives.

“National security in Nigeria is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach from all sectors of the society.

“The country has been grappling with various forms of insecurity in the past decade which include terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, communal clashes, oil theft, piracy, drug and human trafficking, illegal unregulated and unreported fishing and cyber crimes, among others.

“To curtail this security situation, an all of society approach is required.

“The approach involves the participation of the government, security agencies, civil organisations, religious leaders, traditional leaders, the press and the general public,” he said.

Irabor said that the military has been recording successes in the fight against terrorists and other non-state actors in the last decade.

“In order to tackle and subdue the security challenges in the country, several military operations and exercises have been launched by the AFN across the country since 2009.

“Recently, the FGN adopted a non-kinetic approach by developing a policy framework and National Action Plan for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (NAPPCVE).

“The plan recognises the integrated roles of the AFN with the larger society as critical, by adopting a whole of Government and whole of society approach.

“Consequently, the combination of kinetic and non-kinetic efforts have led to a lot of successes in the ongoing operations conducted by the AFN across the country,” he said.

Irabor explained that the Non-Kinetic military operations involved the use of psychological, diplomatic negotiations and economic sanctions to achieve military objectives.

He added that it included civil military operations, cyber warfare, covert intelligence operations and media operations, among others.

“These operations can be used in combination with each other or with traditional military action to achieve specific objectives.

“They are often used in situations where traditional military activities are either not feasible or not appropriate.”

He further said that they can be used to achieve strategic objectives without causing unnecessary damage or loss of life.

The CDS said that the workshop was aimed at re-directing broadcast professionals to promote the benefits derivable by whole of society approach in conflict management.

“It is hoped that the training will assist in bringing synergy between the AFN and the media in curtailing the various security challenges in the country,” Irabor said.

He appreciated all the officers and men of the AFN for their relentless sacrifices and efforts to secure the country.

In his remarks, Malam Balarabe Ilelah, Director General (D-G), Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC), there was the need for the media to support military campaigns aimed at tackling the country’s security challenges.

“To achieve this, media should be encouraged by all stakeholders to exhibit professionalism and avoid creating tensions or confusion in the minds of the citizens when reporting security matters.”

According to him, this is because of the inherent implications on the country’s corporate existence.

He added that broadcasting was spontaneous in nature and could reach millions of people at the same time.

“And some of its recipients are passive because they don’t question the integrity and credibility of whatever is transmitted through such medium.

“It is against this background that the NBC is tasked with the responsibility of regulating the broadcast content.”

The NBC D-G noted that the workshop was timely, and called on journalists to avoid using anonymous sources to reveal sensitive intelligence to the public that may affect security operations.

Meanwhile Otumba Adebayo Abdulrazak, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Zacklair Media Consultants Investment Limited, organisers of the workshop, said the workshop was for content creators and programmers.

He said it was meant to explore ways the broadcast media could be used to support the military in this critical period of the nation. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Real GDP growth rate for manufacturing industry stands at 7.7 percent

The real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate for the Angolan manufacturing industry recorded a cumulative 7.7%, the minister of Industry and Commerce Victor Fernandes has said.

Victor Fernandes was speaking at the opening ceremony of the III Consultative Council of the sector on Thursday, held in Lubango city, southern Huila province.

He said the growth reflected mainly in 2022, which stood at around 6%, surpassing the projection foreseen in the General State Budget (OGE) for that year.

He said in response to the challenge caused by Covid-19 pandemic, the country has recovered its full capacity to supply essential goods and services.

He attributed the capacity to the implementation of public policies for industrial growth and commercial development.

“As a result, trade with regional partners increased significantly, contributing to an increase in the national GDP and the supply of local products at lower prices”, he stressed.

He said that the perspective of growth in the industrial sector was now supported by the existence of a wide range of more than 160 structural projects, in different stages of development.

He cited the existence of sectors in which the national industry is able to respond to the needs of domestic demand, competing with imported products, with stress to building materials, food products, drinks, packaging, graphic activity, furniture and school equipment.

Commerce licenses more than 87,000 outlets in 15 years

In his speech, the minister said that commercial services in Angola registered a significant evolution from 2007 to 2022, with a growth of 109%.

He put at more than 87,000 licensed commercial outlets, between wholesalers and retailers, with a tendency to increase.

Victor Fernandes, who praised the evolution, said that it is as a result of the Executive’s public policies that fostered a growth that was most evident in the northern region of the country, driven by the province of Luanda, followed by the south and center region of Angola.

He defended the need to continue to improve the conditions for the development of the national productive sector, by guaranteeing the availability of raw materials and an effective commercial network, allowing the flow of the said production.

He also referred to the challenges linked to the trading of rural production, due to disconnection between the production areas and the main consumption areas, mostly located in coastal regions or in provincial capitals, supported by an informal commercial network.

The country’s Informal sector continues to be one of the main challenges in terms of trade, he said

The official noted that the legislative adequacy of the industry and commerce sector seems to be relevant due to intra-African integration issues and the need to speed up the process of diversifying the economy and establishing a regulated market economy, which has allowed the formalisation of economic activities.

Victoria United: Regular payment of players, stabilizing factor for team, president says

Elite Two club Victoria United, will play in the first division next season, following their first-place finish in the 2022/2023 campaign.

Valentine Nkwain, the club president, has said besides hard work, the regular payment of players’ salaries hugely accounts for the cohesion that exists within the team.

“I grew up knowing that when people are working hard, they must be well paid.”

“The Federation asked us to pay 75,000 FCFA, but none of my players is earning 75,000 FCFA. The least of my players is earning 100,000 FCFA and up to 350,000 FCFA” the president revealed.

“I don’t fail. My policy is people must be paid. There is no debt. No arriers of salary, no arriers of match bonuses” he pointed out.

The players as well as the technical staff hold the president in high esteem: “We thank our president, he is our first secret, because he has put a lot at our disposal…We have a professional team, the salary for the players is regular, everything is there, the necessary accampaniment is there” Guy Bertin Kamguia, the head coach indicated.

New World Citizenship Report 2023 shows HNWIs and mass affluent in search of freedom: CS Global Partners

London, April 26, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The second edition of the annual World Citizenship Report, reveals how high-net-worth-individuals (HNWIs) and the mass affluent are in search of greater freedoms – whether that means being able to enjoy better social safety and security for oneself and family, increased access to better employment prospects and business opportunities or being able to live in territories with higher social and institutional stability – the post-Covid ‘normal’ has global citizens looking beyond the confines of their own borders when thinking about their own future, and the future of their families.

With so much change happening so rapidly around us – inflation, broader macroeconomic volatility, geopolitical instability, energy uncertainty – it can be challenging to keep up with how all these disparate factors coming to bear on the prevailing attitudes toward global citizenship.

The World Citizenship Report is the world’s first-ever endeavour in investigating the value of citizenship through the lens of the global citizen. It answers how can we keep abreast of the shifting kaleidoscope of citizenship values and priorities using the World Citizenship Index, an innovative tool that takes a holistic approach to rank the world’s citizenships across multiple dimensions.

The World Citizenship Index is the product of a research-driven approach that goes beyond ordinary concepts of passport strength by placing greater emphasis on the diverse attitudes regarding key facets of citizenship. Unlike other rating tools, the World Citizenship Index ranking is designed to reflect a citizenship’s value through the lens of the newest generation of global citizens: the mass affluent population.

Biggest motivators to invest in alternative citizenship include quality of life, safety and security and financial freedom
The World Citizenship Report measures 188 countries across five motivators that are most relevant among the newest generation of global citizens – Safety and Security, Economic Opportunity, Quality of Life, Global Mobility and Financial Freedom.

This year, the Quality of Life ranked in first position of the five pillars, overtaking both Physical Safety and Financial Freedom.

Quality of Life looks at territories’ ability to provide its citizens with essential services required for a good standard of living, including higher standards of education and healthcare facilities.

Monaco, Denmark and Hong Kong took the top three spots in the Quality of Life pillar.

The United States came in at 29th position. African countries took the bottom 10 positions, with Somalia taking 185th place.

We are unfortunately living through a period where the standard of living is falling at the fastest rate in over a generation.

At the end of 2022, the UK Office for Budget Responsibility reported that UK households are set to suffer a 7.1 per cent fall in living standards over the next two years, the largest decline in six decades. And, according to the latest United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report published at the end of 2022, living conditions in 90 per cent of the world’s countries deteriorated in 2021 – something that hasn’t been seen since the height of the previous global recession caused by the financial crisis in 2007. Moreover, it marked the first consecutive year of decline in the 32-year history of the Human Development Index (HDI).
This data shows why quality of life is so highly coveted among global mass affluents, and indeed all individuals.

The Safety and Security motivator assesses how people in a certain country have the ability to enjoy greater social safety and security for themselves and their families and whether they have a safety net against being trapped in a territory with civil disorder.

Iceland took first place in the Safety and Security motivator, New Zealand came a close second place and Switzerland took third place. Afghanistan scored the lowest in this pillar.

Safety and Security remains an obvious top priority for the average mass affluent global citizen. This comes as no surprise given the uncertain state of the world – one need to look no further than the war in Ukraine as a painful reminder of the relative fragility of peace. Western nations now have a growing preoccupation or sense of danger around the prospect of war, having an active war so close to home compared with conflicts in Asia, Africa, and other parts of the world.

The Financial Freedom motivator measures the ability of a country to provide a favourable and stable regulatory climate for the establishment and functioning of businesses, as well as the holding of personal and business assets.

Denmark, New Zealand and Singapore took the first three spots in this pillar.

The growing desire for citizens to conduct their own financial affairs such as wealth management and estate planning without undue surveillance and burdensome regulations appears to be a feature of the current economic climate. While 43 per cent of World Citizenship Report survey respondents placed the heaviest emphasis on the employment opportunities typically associated with economic performance, those that placed importance on investments, estate planning, and wealth planning combined for a total of 37 per cent.

These sentiments reflect the growing perception that the rising costs of living and broader economic uncertainty are being accompanied by a creeping tax burden as state expenditures continue to escalate due to rocketing debt-servicing costs brought on by a tightening monetary landscape, rapid demographic changes, and other factors.

It must also be noted that governments themselves are being stressed by this tightening fiscal landscape due to the rising costs of servicing their debt – a factor that is fuelling the trend of rising tax burdens globally.

“In the 2022 edition of the World Citizenship Report, we only surveyed high-net-worth individuals (HNWI), this year, we expanded the survey to include a wider audience in order to gain a better perspective of what people prioritise in terms of their own nationality. The expanded audience of over 1000 participants included both HNWIs and the mass affluent from across the globe. Findings from the survey showed that while the research participants came from varied backgrounds and cultures, all with different needs and pain points, they all had one common goal: freedom,” concludes Micha Emmet, CEO of CS Global Partners.
