Central African Republic Secures $9.175 Million Grant to Enhance Urban Climate Resilience

Bangui: The World Bank has approved an additional grant financing of $9.175 million from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for the Inclusive and Resilient Cities Project (PROVIR) in the Central African Republic. This new funding is set to bolster climate-resilient infrastructure in the cities of Bangui and Berbérati by supporting nature-based solutions, such as the regeneration of urban forests and the development of green avenues and public spaces.

According to World Bank, this initiative will benefit approximately 300,000 residents in Bangui and Berbérati, including vulnerable groups like refugees, internally displaced persons, returnees, women, and youth. These improvements aim to enhance living conditions by providing better access to infrastructure that is protected against floods and erosion.

Guido Rurangwa, World Bank Country Manager for the Central African Republic, highlighted the country's high vulnerability to climate change and the risks posed by deforestation and environmental changes. He emphasized the potential of nature-based solutions, stating that their integration with grey infrastructure in the targeted cities will enhance rainwater retention, mitigating flood risks and soil erosion. Additionally, these solutions are expected to create various livelihood opportunities, from forest products to fishing.
