Cape town: Central African Republic United Nations (UN) relief chief Fletcher has fast-tracked the allocation of $3 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to bolster Ebola readiness efforts in the Central African Republic. The move comes amidst increasing concerns about the potential spread of Ebola into the country from neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo, where cases have been confirmed in provinces adjacent to the Central African Republic.
According to African Press Organization, Fletcher stated that the allocated funds will be used to enhance surveillance, improve isolation capacity, engage with communities, and increase access to water. These measures are aimed at preventing an outbreak and mitigating the impact should the virus spread across the border.
The Central African Republic is already grappling with a humanitarian crisis fueled by conflict, floods, disease outbreaks, and regional instability. Currently, an estimated 2.3 million people, representing over a third of the population, require essential assistance. The financial support from CERF is seen as crucial in addressing the immediate threat of Ebola, even as the country contends with its ongoing challenges.
This year's humanitarian appeal for the Central African Republic stands at $264 million, but only $112 million has been received so far, covering just over 42 percent of the required funding.
