Bangui: Hopes of finding survivors at a collapsed gold mine in Central African Republic were fading Thursday, two days after a disaster that local officials and the Red Cross reported killed more than 100 people. The government, however, reported a death toll of 49. According to France24.com, Mines Minister Rufin Benam Beltoungou shared with independent broadcaster Radio Ndeke Luka that the collapse resulted in the deaths of 35 Central Africans, 13 Cameroonians, and two Chadians. His figures were substantially lower than those provided by local officials, witnesses, and relatives of victims, who have indicated that over 100 people lost their lives in the tragic incident.
