Toamasina: Three-year-old Armane from rural Madagascar can now smile without shame, thanks to a life-changing cleft lip surgery provided by international charity Mercy Ships (www.MercyShips.org).
According to African Press Organization, for Armane's mother, Roseline, the day of his birth was filled with both relief and fear. After a long and difficult labor in a remote rice field, she was handed her baby, but only after the birth attendants tried to hide his face. Roseline expressed her initial worry, as people in the village considered Armane cursed due to his cleft lip.
Roseline faced numerous challenges in caring for Armane. She had to adopt special techniques to breastfeed him because he could not suck properly on the cleft lip. As a result, Armane was very weak, requiring vitamins and facing struggles with speaking. Despite the stigma, Roseline and her husband remained hopeful for a solution.
Hope came when Roseline encountered Mercy Ships volunteers and saw photos of other children who had similar conditions. Determined, she embarked on a four-day journey to the Africa Mercy®, a floating hospital ship docked in Toamasina, where Armane would receive the free surgery that would transform his life.
American nurse Mollie Felder, who cared for Armane post-operation, emphasized the profound impact of the surgery. She noted that the one-hour procedure was about more than just physical appearance; it restored dignity and confidence. At the hospital's HOPE Center, Armane and his sister found an accepting environment that fostered healing even before the surgery.
Armane's recovery was smooth, and upon returning to his village, the transformation left neighbors in disbelief. Roseline recounted how many people came to see Armane, astonished by the change. Armane's father, upon seeing his son, was overwhelmed with relief, expressing that his worries were gone.
For Roseline and her husband, the surgery not only restored their son's face but also reignited their hope. Armane, once surrounded by shame and whispers, now finds himself embraced by love and a future full of promise. Roseline, filled with joy, expressed her happiness that her son will no longer face mockery and will always be loved.
