Merck Foundation and Kenya First Lady Collaborate to Enhance Healthcare Capacity

Nairobi: Senator Rasha Kelej (Ret.) and H.E. Mrs. RACHEL RUTO E.G.H., First Lady of the Republic of Kenya, convened at the 7th Edition of the Merck Foundation First Ladies Initiative Summit to discuss collaborative efforts aimed at building healthcare capacity in Kenya.

According to African Press Organization, the summit, organized by the Merck Foundation, was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, alongside Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej (Ret.) and First Ladies from several African nations. The event focused on enhancing healthcare through specialized training and education programs. Senator Rasha Kelej expressed satisfaction in providing 244 scholarships for Kenyan doctors across critical medical specialties, with nearly half awarded to female healthcare providers.

H.E. Mrs. RACHEL RUTO E.G.H. highlighted the significant impact of these scholarships on Kenya's healthcare system. She emphasized the partnership's role in improving healthcare accessibility and quality, noting that the scholarships mark an extraordinary milestone for the nation.

The Educating Linda program was also discussed, providing annual scholarships to 47 underprivileged girls to support their education. This initiative aims to empower young women through education, a key factor in societal advancement.

Day two of the summit included a committee meeting with African and Asian First Ladies, where they shared impact reports and discussed future strategies for Merck Foundation programs in their respective countries.

Merck Foundation, in partnership with Kenya's First Lady, has provided numerous scholarships for young doctors, covering specialties such as Diabetes, Oncology, Fertility, and more. These efforts have led to the establishment of specialized clinics by Merck Foundation Alumni, enhancing healthcare services and awareness in Kenya.

The foundation has awarded over 2500 scholarships across 52 countries in underserved medical fields. Additionally, Merck Foundation has launched storybooks and media initiatives to address social and health issues, breaking stigmas and promoting education.

In collaboration with the First Lady of Kenya, Merck Foundation has also introduced various awards to recognize and encourage talent in media, music, fashion, and filmmaking, furthering their commitment to social awareness and empowerment.

Merck Foundation's comprehensive approach aims to transform patient care and tackle social and health issues across Africa, Asia, and beyond, through education, media training, and community engagement.
