Bangui: In the Central African Republic, President Faustin-Archange Touadéra is seeking a third consecutive term in the general elections scheduled for this Sunday. Having been in power since 2016, Touadéra, now 68, is facing six contenders. However, he is considered the frontrunner, largely due to his strong influence over state institutions. According to Nam News Network, a victory for Touadéra would further solidify Russia's influence in the nation. Russia has engaged in multiple cooperation agreements with the Central African Republic, offering security assistance in return for access to valuable natural resources, including gold and diamonds. Touadéra's campaign has prioritized improving national security, highlighting peace agreements signed this year with various armed factions. Some of these groups have been weakened by the presence of Russian Wagner mercenaries and Rwandan forces, who are operating alongside UN peacekeepers at the government's behest. The opposition has expressed concerns over Tou adéra's pursuit of extended power, particularly after a 2023 constitutional referendum eliminated presidential term limits. Critics argue that his leadership has not improved the living conditions of the country's 5.5 million citizens, pointing to deteriorating infrastructure and an underperforming economy. The elections will encompass presidential, legislative, municipal, and regional levels, with preliminary results anticipated by January 5. Despite assertions of stability, analysts caution that the election remains fraught with risk, given the continued activity of rebel groups and persistent insecurity, notably in the eastern regions of the country.
